Described by UNESCO as being of “exceptional natural beauty”, the World Heritage-listed area of Purnululu National Park is truly a hidden gem. The Bungle Bungle Range is a recent ‘discovery’ – it became known to modern Australians in 1983, although the traditional custodians of the land have lived there for at least 20,000 years. On the south side of the park, spectacular sandstone domes (the finest example of sandstone karst cones in the world) will almost have you believe you are on another planet, while on the north side, beautiful native palm trees grow amongst stunning gorges and chasms. This is a remote area of the Kimberley region of Western Australia, but one that is absolutely worth the detour.
