Home to the oldest rainforest in the world, the largest coral reef system on the planet, and some breathtaking beaches and islands, Far North Queensland is an absolute delight to explore. The tropical climate and monsoon season allow unique birdlife and wildlife to thrive – from birds of paradise to rare tree kangaroos. Rainforests are dense and lush, and cooler climates at higher altitudes offer some relief from the hot, muggy weather.
While the negative impact of humans is sadly extensive, fertile soils and plenty of rainfall have allowed tropical crops to be cultivated in abundance. This is the land of sugar cane, tea, coffee, bananas, mangoes, and other tropical produce. Beach resorts, rainforest retreats and luxury cruises are aplenty, but nature lovers will not miss out on opportunities to escape the crowds and get to know the heritage listed Wet Tropics of Queensland and Great Barrier Reef.
